Brisbane Founding Designer

About the job

On any given Tuesday, our platform might be helping satellite companies win new contracts, handling long security questionnaires for Silicon Valley tech firms, or managing due diligence checklists for major Wall Street funds.

In simple terms: we help businesses respond to complex paperwork and questionnaires that companies send out when they're choosing vendors, the kind that used to take days or even weeks to complete.

In just 2 years (with only 3 engineers at the time), we've built technology that turns a 900-question form from a multi-day nightmare into a 2-hour task. Our rapid growth (10--20% every month) landed us on the Courier Mail's Unicorn Watch List and won Queensland AI Startup of the Year 2024.

Now we're scaling quickly to become the undisputed leader in our category and have a vision of building the largest AI-first company in Brisbane.

Sales teams that used to dread these projects now look forward to them. One customer even said their team feels "joy" starting a new one, another saying ""AutoRFP.ai has been one of the most life changing tools that I've used in my career."

What makes this role interesting

You'll be designer #1, but also our first dedicated product thinker. This isn't about making things pretty (though that matters). It's about understanding why an RFP manager or bid writer spends six hours on a task that should take thirty minutes, then designing the solution that makes it actually take thirty minutes. Our users are smart, busy people who chose this software to get work done, and we respect that.

Your designs ship to Fortune 500 companies in weeks, not quarters. When you solve a UX problem, you'll hear directly from the sales teams, proposal managers, and analysts whose work you've transformed. These aren't typical users. They are domain experts who give thoughtful feedback about information hierarchy and workflow optimization.

You'll own the entire user experience. This is a rare chance to define how humans should interact with AI in enterprise workflows. The patterns you create will shape how people work with this technology for years to come.

You'll work directly with customers to understand their actual problems, not through a game of telephone with sales or success teams. You'll join calls with bid writers, sales operations teams, and investor relations professionals, watch them work, understand their pain points, and turn those insights into features our engineering team can build.

Real global impact from Brisbane. We're already in 44 countries and growing quickly. Every interface you design reaches thousands of users doing critical work, many of which using AutoRFP is their full time job.

What you'll do

  • Design Stack: Figma (or your tool of choice), AI prototyping tools like v0 or Claude, and a healthy skepticism of unnecessary complexity

  • Act as a hybrid product manager/designer, turning customer problems into well-scoped solutions

  • Conduct user research through customer interviews, workflow observations, and rapid prototype testing

  • Design intuitive interfaces for genuinely complex workflows - think multi-step document analysis, collaborative review processes, and AI-assisted decision making

  • Create and evolve our design system from scratch, balancing consistency with shipping speed

  • Work directly with engineers to ensure designs translate into exceptional implemented experiences

  • Define and track success metrics for the features you design

  • Help shape the product roadmap based on user needs and technical constraints

What we're looking for

Product thinking over pixel perfection - You understand that the best interface is sometimes no interface. You ask "why" before "how" and aren't afraid to challenge requirements if they don't serve user needs. For our enterprise customers, a powerful workflow beats a delightful one every time - though the best solutions are often both.

Experience designing complex B2B workflows - You've tackled genuinely hard UX problems - multi-step processes, data-heavy interfaces, collaborative workflows. You know when to use progressive disclosure and when a dense table is better than a dashboard. You get excited about shaving 30 seconds off a workflow that happens 100 times a day, not just creating wow moments.

Comfort with ambiguity and iteration - You can ship a "good enough" solution today while keeping an eye on the ideal solution for tomorrow. You understand that in early-stage companies, done is better than perfect, but you also know when to push for excellence.

Technical fluency without needing to code - You can have intelligent conversations with engineers about implementation tradeoffs. You understand enough about how modern web apps work to design things that are actually buildable.

Customer obsession with commercial awareness - You genuinely care about user problems but also understand that we're building a business. You can balance user delight with features that drive revenue.

Direct & clear communication style - You give and receive feedback directly. You can explain design decisions to customers, engineers, and executives without hiding behind design jargon.

We particularly value experience with document-heavy workflows, enterprise SaaS, AI/LLM interfaces, or complex data intensive applications - but these aren't requirements. We care more about your ability to understand complex problems and design simple solutions.
